Is Premium Better than Regular Gas?

In the vast majority of cases, no. In many cases, it’s actually worse than running regular. Running premium gas in your vehicle isn’t going to damage your truck in any way, but it won’t likely won’t increase performance or efficiency. Premium fuel has an octane rating of 91 or 93, whereas regular fuel is usually around 87, depending on the state you live in (here in South Dakota, both 85 and 87 octane are classified as regular). Higher octane ratings mean that the gas molecule requires higher compression to detonate. In vehicles that have high compression ratios and/or are equipped with a supercharger (like the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat) premium gas is required to achieve proper performance. Most vehicles and trucks are designed to operate on regular fuel, though. So, filling your RAM 1500 or Jeep Grand Cherokee tank with premium is basically just throwing money away.

What If My Owner’s Manual Says “Premium Fuel Recommended?”

If your truck’s owner’s manual says “premium fuel recommended,” you do not have to put premium fuel in the tank. The truck may get a few extra horsepower from using premium, but it will not hurt the engine in any way to use regular. If you’re planning on doing some heavy-duty towing in the near future or going off-roading, you may want to fill up with premium. If you’re just going back and forth to work, though, you can save more by just using regular.
